The Pawn (Endgame Book 1) Kindle Edition
The price of survival...
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl's college to take care of the only family I have left.
There's one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
My virginity.
A forbidden auction...
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he's the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

- Reviewed in Australia on 16 February 2018Verified PurchaseThe pawn was a reminder of why I love the dark romance genre. It also reminded me why I automatically purchase any Skye Warren book without even reading a blurb. I trust her to give me a certain kind of story. A story I’ll want to devour without lifting my eyes from the pages. One that isn’t predictable and pretty. And oh man, did she deliver with the first instalment in this gritty, wicked series.
I just knew this was going to be one of those books. You know the kind. When you finish reading a book in one sitting you wish you could unread it so you could fall into the magic between the pages all over again. One of those books that you’re still thinking about three days later when you don’t know what to do with life because you’re still reeling from the fictional world of those last characters you read about. The Pawn was everything a dark romance lover could want and yet still so much more. So. Much. More.
With a captivating storyline building from those the first few pages alone, I wasn’t just curious about what would happen as I turned the page, I HAD to know. The Pawn was an enthralling masterpiece in all it’s raw, dark glory. A cleverly written tale of revenge and survival. Power and control. Every piece of this story was purposefully written, creating a mind-blowing story full of twists to make your heart pound and stomach flutter.
Avery was a curious heroine and one I really enjoyed. She was different, resilient, powerful in her own right. I liked everything about her. I can’t say the same for Gabriel. He was sinfully sexy which made him all kinds of dangerous. The kind of man to bring goosebumps to your skin and steal your breath with just a glance. He oozed sex and power in a dark way that had me afraid for Avery and her heart. I didn’t like him but he definitely intrigued me in every way. So much so I was dying for more of these two and their story when The Pawn ended.
So how will Avery and Gabriel’s game of power and control continue with outside threats as real as the ones within the walls of their castle? One click the series and find out, dark romance lovers!
You do not want to miss this epic beginning to another dark, delicious series by Skye Warren.
- Reviewed in Australia on 11 December 2019Verified PurchaseIt was hard to understand to start with. It didn’t seem to connect, as you go into further and realise that you need to know a bit about chess. There were parts that still have me curious but I suppose after reading more of her works I will understand things.
- Reviewed in Australia on 22 June 2018Verified PurchaseAdvice - read the blurb and figure out that it might be a bit of a cliffhanger before you start reading!!
The story is fast passed and steamy There is an ending but it’s more like a season finally than an ending neatly wrapped up with a neat little bow.
This story is not over but I didn’t feel left hanging.
- Reviewed in Australia on 27 October 2020Verified PurchaseRecommended by a friend. Wasn't what I was expecting, even though the blurb clearly indicates 'dark romance'. Although it's really well written, heroes (I use the term loosely) as cruel as Gabriel are such a turn off.
- Reviewed in Australia on 18 February 2017Verified PurchaseFell in love with this book. Avery James, Good Girl, the apple of her fathers eye. Only wants to do the right thing for him when he loses his fortune and Avery goes to the extreme of selling the only thing that she values the most.
Gabriel Miller. Now he is a force to be reckoned with. Just when you thinks he is going to be her Knight he turns everything around and proves to her that she is just a Pawn. Purchasing her at auction they begin a real life game of chess. Who will win, what secrets will be revealed. Who will crack slightly and show their true self?
Throughly enjoyed reading Avery and Gabriel story..
- Reviewed in Australia on 11 November 2020Verified PurchaseThis book is edgy, and sexy and all the things a good dark romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in Australia on 8 April 2017Verified PurchaseAvery had everything, until her father's fall from his pedestal. Now she is trying to look after him and she is desperate for money. She goes to the one loan shark, who is powerful and dangerous and asks to auction off the one thing of value she has.... her virginity! Great read, look forward to the next book in the series:)
- Reviewed in Australia on 2 November 2017Verified PurchaseThis was a great story from start to end. Avery was one gutsy chick! The author portrayed her anguish and humiliation perfectly and her gumption in taking the only option she felt she had. Gabrielle was an interesting character, a bad boy with some gentle moments. This was so good I had to buy the follow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel. Wow.
Verified PurchaseThis is my first time reading Skye Warren, and wow, what a read. Avery James's life is shattered when her father double crosses some very powerful people, the life of luxury she's been used to is gone, and so is all the money, everything in fact, except the house, which she is also on the verge of losing. So she tries to get a loan! Enter Gabriel Miller, where to start, his character is so well described. He's captivating, but cruel, exciting but frightening. His personality just draws you in, he's dangerous but intriguing. This description of him is how his character made me feel, excellently written. Can't wait to carry on with The Knight, the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Pawn" by Skye Warren
Verified PurchaseRating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Skye Warren's "The Pawn" is a captivating tale that seamlessly blends elements of romance, suspense, and intrigue. From the moment I delved into the pages of this novel, I was entranced by its gripping plot, multifaceted characters, and exquisite prose.
One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its character development. The protagonist, Avery James, undergoes a profound transformation throughout the story, evolving from a sheltered and naive young woman into a resilient and empowered heroine. Similarly, Gabriel Miller, the enigmatic anti-hero, is a complex and compelling figure whose layers are slowly peeled back, revealing his vulnerabilities and motivations.
Warren's writing style is both eloquent and evocative, drawing readers into the dark and seductive world of the Den with vivid descriptions and atmospheric imagery. Each scene is meticulously crafted, immersing the reader in a tantalizing blend of danger and desire.
One particular aspect that stood out to me was the author's exploration of themes such as power, control, and redemption. The intricate dynamics between the characters and the moral dilemmas they face add depth and complexity to the narrative, leaving a lasting impression on the reader's psyche.
Despite its dark and intense subject matter, "The Pawn" ultimately delivers a message of hope and resilience, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, love has the power to conquer all.
In summary, "The Pawn" is a masterfully written novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Skye Warren has crafted a story that is as thought-provoking as it is enthralling, making it a must-read for fans of romance and suspense alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost checkmate
Verified PurchaseI don't really know much about chess, but fortunately Avery and Gideon's moves are explained.
It's my guess that you'll catch the similarities better if you do know the game.
As far as I get it, it didn't really end in checkmate (yet).
Didn't know there would be so many loose ends on the last pages.
That's a little disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow best book of 2016, blown away
Verified PurchaseOMG, I'm sitting here having finished THE PAWN by Skye Warren, with tears in my eyes and want, want of more, so much more!
Still sitting here hearing fireworks explode in my neighbourhood while I try to recover from this mind blowing story.
Such a mind twisting love, hate, bitterness and enthralling story that it's got to be the top for 2016.
So very happy that I choose this story to bring in the New Year 2017 while hubby sleeps in our bedroom.
Damn but I need someone to discuss what my mind has gone through these last few hours that I've devoured this book, only to find it's not done yet!
Avery, is a wonderfully devoted child of a Father who she we find doesn't deserve her thoughtfulness nor her compassion. She sells herself to save her familia home which gives her the only memories of her lost Mother. To a lost soul that buys her innocence , Gabriel Miller. Still trying to figure out myself if he's friend or foe, pawn or knight in this compelling story. But he certainly would have been wonderful to take my innocence had I the choice.
Ms Avery, did choose to sell her innocence. Certainly she could have been sold to a more sinister man, but this story was still so moving and so compelling my mind is still raddled an hour afterward.
Honestly, can not wait to see what happens with all the characters(or should I say pieces of the chess game) to fall into place in the next instalment . Not sure my heart can wait!
What happens with Avery's Dad?does he survive? What of the house Avery sold her body and soul for? Will Gabriel give it back to her?
What's happened to her false fiancé, Justin? Has Gabriel done something sinister to him as well, all these thought whirling in Avery's mind while she finds herself discarded after Gabriel takes her innocence and sends her away, only to find her familia home gone and the father off to the hospital with a coronary incident. Her prior fiancé missing, what's next and is Avery strong enough to face it?
Thank you so very much,Skye Warren, and when the hell can I read the next instalment! EXHALE
